Course Description:


The purpose of this course is to offer students a broad overview of the historical evolution of the United States: from its original 13 colonies to its current position as a global super-power. The topics covered in the class will allow students to understand the social, economic, religious, cultural, political, and geographical factors which have shaped the nation into what it is today. Following is a list of topics which will be covered in the course:


ü Colonization of the “New World”: Origins, colonial participants, motivations


ü British colonial models: The New England and Middle Colonies: Religion, Commerce, industrialization / The Southern Colonies: Agricultural labor, slavery…


ü Native Americans: between negotiations, displacement, and extermination


ü Becoming American: the making of a nation (revolution / creation of a federal government)


ü Western Expansion: Explorations, Manifest Destiny and the Civil War


ü Abolition of slavery, Reconstruction and Jim Crow


ü Immigration and the making of the American economy


ü American social movements


ü The U.S. and the World: American imperialism, WWI, WWII, Cold War, Middle East…
