Prerequisite
Students who sign up for this course should have basic knowledge of the key concepts of management studies, information system and organization studies. The ability to ask critical questions is essential for the success in this course, as well as an active curiosity towards ideas and innovations.
Goal
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- identify the key elements for understanding and evaluating on-line business [what does online business mean?];
- compare the business models in the traditional and in the virtual (internet-based) domains [what are the differences between a traditional and an internet-based business?];
- understand the differences between private and open source business models [what does OS mean? How does it work?];
- use open source principles and models for structuring a new business [how to use user-innovation models as business strategy?].

Online Business is a complex and fascinating area. Managing the Net (module 1) is an introduction to the main characteristics of online business: how it works and how it can be managed. The main characteristics, and limitations of successfull online business are explored, as well as some of the business opportunities rising trough emerging digital tools. E-business models will be explained, as well as their characteristics and their practical implications. Managing the Net 1 will also work on business ideas and models that will be further developed in Managing the Net II course.
Presentation
The first module of Managing the Net 1 is a structured introduction on models, examples and characteristics of online business.

The course has a double granularity analysis: the organizational level : cusing on the strategies that companies adopt to compete on Internet-, and the individual level –analyzng individual behaviors in digital domain. The main topics discussed in the course are:
1) identifying characteristics and trends of business based on digital environments;
2) introducing tools for analyzing and planning digital business models;
3) theoretically describing the main characteristics and uses of SEO and Web Design Strategies
4) recent digital business trends (e.g. mobile, crowd, open source, open innovation).

Succeeding in this course is a prerequisite for applying to the advanced course "Managing the Net 2 : How to Create Your Online Business", where students will have the opportunity to test their ability in building their own online business.

Group discussion, visual presentation, group exercises, individual exercises, and real-world case studies tailored to each topic. Learning is further reinforced as attendees work on carefully selected case studies and exercises which incorporate the core concepts presented in the lectures. People learn the best by being engaged, so we orient the course to engage the participants throughout the learning experience.
