1. Digital literacy, i.e., a general understanding of basic computer concepts (software and hardware), the Internet, new information technologies and digital security
2. General understanding of how IT is being used in organizational settings
3. Familiarity with mathematical logic and set theory, including applications in Boolean algebras
At the end of the course the student should be able to :
1. Recognize how data must be stored in a relational database
2. Describe the relational set operators
3. Practice data modeling and ER diagramming
4. Explain the concepts of dependency diagram, partial dependency, transitive dependency and relational schema
5. Apply normalization methods to any type of data structure in order to achieve 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Boyce-Codd normal forms
6. Practice SQL (both data definition and data manipulation) programming
7. Discuss the basics of the analysis and design of database systems
8. Identify issues related to organizational administration and security of database systems
