There are no prerequisites for this course. It will start with a general introduction to trade and investment protection policy. New comers to this theme are welcome. Only a basic knowledge of EU policy-making is needed.

This is a course on EU Trade and EU Investment Protection Policies.


The students will:


* Analyse the history, the economic and political actors and the theories behind EU trade and EU investment protection deals


* Know the controversial elements of recent EU trade and investment protection deals (EU-Mercosur, Energy Charter Treaty, etc.)


* Analyse the different arguments in current trade debates: free trade versus protectionism; trade and the environment; trade and development; etc.


* Interact with different actors in the decision-making process such as MEP, NGO and business community representatives, etc.


The 9 lessons of 2 hours will cover the following topics:


* History and theory behind free trade and globalisation


* Recent EU trade deals


* EU Investment Protection policy (ISDS and ICS)


* The impact of EU Trade policy on development and climate policies


* Current debates on trade (WTO, China, etc.). The two last lessons will be created with input from students.
