A basic understanding of statistics and research methods is useful for this course, though not mandatory. Familiarity with programming or data analysis tools such as R is also beneficial for the practical sessions.
The primary objective of this course is to introduce students to key digital methods for social research. By the end of the course, students will have gained foundational knowledge of designing web surveys, performing content analysis, and applying basic text mining and sentiment analysis techniques to textual data. They will also develop skills in data mining and regression analysis, equipping them to identify patterns in data and make preliminary predictions. Additionally, students will be introduced to network analysis, learning how to interpret the structure and dynamics of social networks. Through hands-on exercises and project presentations, students will begin to apply these digital methods to relevant research questions.
This course provides an in-depth exploration of digital methods for social research, focusing on both theoretical foundations and practical applications. It begins with an overview of studying society through social media, followed by techniques for collecting data in the digital era, specifically web surveys. The course then introduces content analysis, examining methodologies for analysing various forms of content. Subsequent sessions cover text mining and sentiment analysis, data mining, and regression analysis, providing students with the skills to handle and interpret large datasets. The theoretical sessions conclude with network analysis, followed by laboratory sessions and two final sessions dedicated to students’ presentations.
