Students will need to have the appropriate basis in math and statistics. Also students will need to have a good knowledge of the fundamentals of the subjects they have chosen as their subject domain, so to be able to tentatively plan preliminary ideas for their final dissertation.

The objective of the course is to provide students with a basic understanding of the research methods necessary to design and plan their research projects (including their master thesis or consulting projects). At the end of the course a student should be able to:

• Understand between qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies
• Perform a literature review and design a research question
• Have the basis to design and realize research studies with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods

In the first part of the course (first session) we will introduce the topic of research methods and discuss how to choose among alternative methods, and how to plan for research questions. We will also discuss how to plan for an adequate literature review. In the second part (two sessions) we will discuss qualitative methods and notions to evaluate the quality and the reliability of qualitative analysis. In the third part of the course (three sessions), students will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the most common methods of quantitative research design and sampling, survey development and quantitative data analysis.
