N/A

This course provides an introduction into the use of qualitative methods in the social sciences. Through a mix of interactive lectures, group work, and in-class exercises, students will be exposed to the main principles and objectives of qualitative research, as well as practical challenges associated with research design, data collection, and analysis. Accordingly, the course is divided into four main modules:

  1. Introduction to qualitative research
  2. Data collection
  3. Data analysis (including potential tools)
  4. Research in action/methods lab

The objective of the course is to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills to undertake a qualitative research project (i.e. the dossier de recherche). Accordingly, by the end of the course, students will understand the main tenants of qualitative research and the questions to which it is suited. They will be able to evaluate the robustness of a qualitative research project by looking at its reliability, validity, and transferability. Finally, students will gain ‘hands-on’ experience with qualitative data collection and analysis methods, as well as associated advantages and disadvantages.
