No prerequisites per se, but some knowledge about international issues is a plus.
This course aims to help students understand how ethics come into play in the field of international relations and to help them develop a critical understanding of how such issues can drive or influence the behavior of actors. Together with this, this course aims at understanding how international law and ethics enter in a complex relation when it comes to topics such as genocide, compensations, or boycotts. One key issue is to develop an understanding of the various dimensions of ethics in the international fields, from the state to the individual level.
The course is organized in lectures, each covering a different topic, gradually moving from war to peace, and from state issues to private ones. Over the course of the lectures students will deal with topics such as just war, post-war justice, sanctions, reparations for crimes against humanity, fair trade, and ethical global movements.
