Knowledge of EU political system and EU major contemporary developments.
The objective of the course is to explore major contemporaty debates about the EU through the specific lens of European values. Over the last decades, the EU has gone through major crises, that some have described as a “polycrisis”. These crises have fueled intense public and scholarly debates and sometimes controversies about the EU’s governance and identity. Those debates have very often mobilised several values, reclaimed as European (solidarity, rule of law, human dignity, security, democracy, equality…). These values are used to defend contrasting visions of Europe’s objectives and identity and to asssess whether the EU is capable to uphold its fundamental principles.
Students will acquire a deep understanding of these debates through the preparation of role plays enacting critical meetings and negotiations.
The first 3 sessions are dedicated to lectures and discussions introducing the concepts of (European) values and exploring how several values are defined EU treaties and policies and in contemporary political debates.
From session 4, after an introduction by the professor, a group of students will present a role play enacting a debate around fundamental European values at stake in major EU crises or ideological divisions:
– The European sovereign debt crisis
– The migrant crisis
– The rule of law conflict
– Divides around the abortion right
– The Covid-Crisis
