The objective of this course is to provide students with a panoramic view of game theory and its practical applications in political science. The presentation of the material will be informal, with the mission of understanding the fundamental concepts of the subject. No prior knowledge of game theory is required; the presentation will start from scratch. By the end of the course, students will have an intuitive understanding of the fundamental concepts of game theory and its potential applications.


No prior knowledge of game theory is required.




Basic concepts. Classification of games: sequential and non-sequential games, repeated games, cooperative and non-cooperative games. Most common games: Prisoner’s Dilemma, Stag Hunt game, Chicken, Battle of the sexes, Matching Pennies. Solution concepts. Dominance reasoning. Nash equilibrium. Focal points. Minimax method. Backward induction. Rationalizability. Mixed strategies. Collective action games. Glimpses into evolutionary game theory.
