Descriptive statistics (graphs, mean, variance,cross-table…)
– Random variables
– Expected value, variance, standard deviation
– Usual probability distributions (Normal )
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
-use a database and give an estimate for a population parameter (mean, proportion and sdandard deviation),
– compute confidence intervals for a mean or a proportion and perform statistical tests
– analyse and test the relationship between two qualitative or quantitative variables
– determine sample size for the mean and for the proportion
– compare the means of two independent populations
– according to the database, recognize what kind of confidence intervals and statistics tests should be performed
-integrate a group to do a project
Have greater awareness about ESRS topics such as: Capacity to interact and collaborate
with others effectively, including in teams, in the workplace, and in culturally or linguistically diverse
contexts, Ability to analyse and critically evaluate arguments, Ethical awareness (professional and personal) and academic integrity.
Chapter 1: The normal distribution
Chapter 2 : Sampling
-Probability distribution of the sample mean, proportion and standard deviation
Chapter 3: Estimate and confidence intervals
-estimator’s properties; CI for the mean when the population variance is unknown; CI for the proportion; margin of error and sample size
Chapter 4: Statistical tests
-one-tail test; two-tail test; p-value
Chapter 5 : Chi-Square test for independence
-use excel to draw a pivot-table
-independency test
Chapter 6: Two-Sample tests
