It is advised that students have an introductory-level knowledge of human resource management.

At the end of the course the student should be able to :

Show evidence of having an extensive knowledge base on the frameworks, techniques and methods available to integratively manage the turnover and retention of employees. At the end of the course the student should be familiar with turnover and retention, understand their linkages with other HRM domains (recruitment, selection, workforce planning, etc.) and acknowledge the importance of an integrated approach. He or she should then have substantial knowledge to:

– understand and recognize the dynamics of various kinds of employee turnover.
– master the appropriate techniques to develop employee retention programs in firms.
– make the link with workforce planning.
– make the link with recruitment strategies, selection practices, and other HRM domains.
– integratively manage these HRM domains from a retention and human capital perspective.
– be able to behave ethically and manage responsibly the outflow of employees (e.g. ethical
– issues in firing employees, related organizational justice, etcetera).
– to employ state-of-the-art human resource management techniques to vitalize the organization
(LO5C)

This is an advanced course on HRM in intensive format. It deeply explores HRM practices related to employee turnover and retention, as well as their linkages to the wider HRM domain. During the sessions the lecturer will introduce and explain the core theory based on the course material. Students will be asked to work on exercises, discuss cases and present their ideas on specific topics. Students are expected to participate actively in the course.
