Présentation

Prérequis

General knowledge of EU policies and of European public issues.

Objectifs

The course invites the student to explore an often understudied dimension of European politics: the mobilization of social movements at the European level to oppose, criticize and/or shape European policies and European public issues. A central objective is to understand whether these movements are essentially Eurosceptic or whether they reflect a form of critical but constructive Europeanism.

Présentation

The course will first shortly present what are social movements and what are the specificities of transnational mobilizations, at the European level in particular. We will then explore a series of mobilizations and social movements dedicated to specific policy fields or public problems and challenges:

  • the pan-European farmers’ movement,

  • the Euromarches against unemployment, precarity and social exclusion,

  • the Indignados movement,

  • the Anti TTIP/CETA campaigns (with the intervention of an activist),

  • the transnational fight against sexist and racial discriminations,

  • the European Marches for Climate

  • and finally, the different mobilizations pro or against migrants.
